Breakdown recovery
Before towing, set the lever to Neutral (N position on vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox) then wait approximately one minute (on the Hybrid version), unlock the steering column then release the parking brake.
On vehicles fitted with an automatic gearbox, if it is not possible to set the gear lever to N position, consult an approved dealer.
Steering column unlocking
Insert the key into the ignition switch and set it to the "On" position or, depending on the vehicle, with the card present in the passenger compartment, press and hold the engine start button for around two secondsIgnition-starter switch on a vehicle with keyIgnition-starter switch on a vehicle with card.
Set the lever to neutral (position N for vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox).
On the Hybrid version, wait approximately one minute before towing.
The steering column unlocks and the accessory functions are powered: you can use the vehicle's lights (direction indicator lights, brake lights). At night the vehicle must have its lights on.
Depending on the vehicle, once you have finished towing, press the engine start button twice (risk of running down the battery).
The speed specified by current legislation for towing must always be observed.
If you are driving the towing vehicle, do not exceed the maximum towing weight for your vehicle Weights (in kg).
warning
- Use a rigid tow bar. If a rope or cable is used (where the law allows this), the vehicle being towed must be able to brake.
- a vehicle must not be towed if it is not fit to be driven.
- avoid accelerating or braking suddenly when towing, as this may result in damage being caused to the vehicle.
- In any case, it is advisable not to exceed 16 mph (25 km/h).
- Do not push the vehicle if the steering column is locked.
Front and rear towing points
Use only
- at the front: towing point 2 or, depending on the vehicle, the towing eye 5Tools and the towing point;
- at the rear: towing point 6.
These towing points may only be used for towing: never use them for lifting the vehicle directly or indirectly.
To access the front towing point 2
Depending on the vehicle, press area A and maintain the pressure while pulling on area B to open the flap 1.
Before towing or repairing your vehicle, remove the flap 1.
Special case of refitting the front flap 1:
- Insert the hook 4 into the housing 3;
- place area A of the flap 1 on the bumper and press area B.
or
- Depending on the vehicle, unclip the front cover 1 by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver or a similar tool into the groove C;
- tighten the towing ring 5 fully: first by hand until it stops, then finish by locking it using the wheelbrace;
- after use, loosen the towing ring 5 and press the cover 1 to lock it.
Use only the towing ring 5 and the wheelbrace Tools.
warning
Ensure that the tow eye is screwed in correctly.
Risk of losing the towed object.
Rear towing point 6

When the engine is stopped, steering and braking assistance are no longer provided.

Do not leave the tools unsecured inside the vehicle as they may be projected during braking.
Towing a 4-wheel drive ( 4WD ) vehicle
tip
You must never tow a 4-wheel drive vehicle, irrespective of the mode selected, if one of the 4 wheels is in contact with the ground (except for off-road recovery).
Risk of mechanical damage.
warning
Do not remove the key from the ignition switch, or leave the card in the vehicle during towing (depending on the vehicle).
Risk of the steering column locking.
Off-road recovery
If your vehicle is stuck in sand, snow or mud, attach a flexible towing device (towing belt or other device specially designed for this purpose) to the front or rear towing point.

Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for information on how to fit and operate the equipment.
If a 4x4 (4WD) vehicle becomes stuck, it should only be towed for a short distance. Risk of mechanical damage.
warning
For off-road recovery, it is forbidden to use a rigid bar to tow a vehicle that is stuck. Risk of mechanical damage.
Towing a vehicle with an automatic gearbox
Transport the vehicle on a trailer or tow it with the front wheels off the ground.
In exceptional circumstances and excluding Hybrid, vehicles, the vehicle can be towed with all four wheels on the ground, forwards only, with the gearbox in neutral N position, over a maximum distance of 50 miles (80 km) and not exceeding a speed of 16 mph (25 km/h).
Note: if the gear lever cannot be set to N position, contact an approved dealer.
warning
When storing the tools, ensure they are securely replaced in the luggage compartment, in their original position.
Do not leave the tools unsecured inside the vehicle as they may be projected during braking.
