Selecting automatic gearbox positions

Selector lever 1

R : reverse

N : neutral

D : forward

B : forward gear with increased regenerative braking (depending on the vehicle)

Button 2

Press button 2 once to disengage/engage the Park position P.

warning

Before leaving the vehicle, check that the P position is engaged (the position is displayed on the instrument panel and the indicator light on button 2 is lit), and make sure that the electronic parking brake is applied.

Risk of loss of immobilisation of the vehicle

Display 3

Display 3 on the instrument panel informs you of the position engaged by the gearbox or, depending on the vehicle, the gear engaged in manual driving mode.

Operation

Operation

With the vehicle stationary and the gearbox in P position (indicator light on button 2 on), start the engine.

With your foot on the brake pedal, move the selector lever 1 one or two notches forwards or backwards to engage the desired position (R, N, D or B), then release the lever: it will return to its stable position. The indicator light on button 2 goes out.

Note: On Hybrid versions, the READY message is displayed on the instrument panel when the engine starts.

The lever must only be shifted to D, B or R position while the vehicle is stationary, your foot is on the brake and the accelerator pedal is released. The engaged position is displayed on the instrument panel.

If certain conditions prevent shifting from one position to another, the requested position flashes on the instrument panel.

tip

With D, R or, depending on the vehicle, B position engaged, when the vehicle is stationary it sets off at a low speed as soon as you release the brake pedal (without pressing the accelerator pedal).

To disengage P position

With the vehicle stationary, the engine running and P position engaged (indicator light on button 2 on), press the brake pedal and move the selector lever 1 forwards or backwards to the desired position. The indicator light on button 2 goes out.

If the brake pedal is not fully pressed, the "Press brake pedal" message and 2_ALL_472_1_pictogramme.png warning light are displayed on the instrument panel.

Note:

  • if the driver opens their door to leave the vehicle and P position has not been engaged, a beep sounds and the "P not engaged" message is displayed on the instrument panel;
  • the 2_ALL_472_1_pictogramme.png warning light is displayed on the instrument panel whenever it is necessary to press the brake pedal to change the position of the automatic gearbox.

To engage P position.

With the vehicle stationary and the engine running or the ignition on, press the button 2 to engage P position.

P position is displayed on the instrument panel and the indicator light on button 2 lights up once P position is engaged.

tip

The P position must only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary.

tip

Gearbox position P cannot be engaged as a substitute for applying the parking brake.

To engage Neutral position (N)

With the vehicle stationary and the engine running, move the selector lever 1 a notch forwards or backwards for approximately two seconds, depending on the gear engaged, to engage N position.

To engage drive (D position)

With the vehicle stationary and the engine running, shift the selector lever 1 two notches backwards to engage D position.

If one of the conditions is not met, the display D flashes for about five seconds and the "Press brake pedal" message appears on the instrument panel for about 15 seconds.

Note: with the engine running, when the vehicle is moving at between approximately 0 and 2 mph (0 and 4 km/h), and the lever 1 is in N or R position, it is necessary to press the brake pedal to engage D position. This is useful during parking manoeuvres requiring several alternating forward shifts and backward shifts.

To engage reverse gear (R position)

With the vehicle stationary and the engine running, shift the selector lever 1 two notches forwards to engage R position.

If the brake pedal is not pressed, a beep will sound, the R position indicator will flash for about five seconds on the instrument panel and a "Press brake pedal" message will appear for about 15 seconds.

Note: when the engine is running and the vehicle is moving at between 0 and 2 mph (0 to 4 km/h), with the lever 1 in N or D position, it is not necessary to press the brake pedal to engage R position. This is useful during parking manoeuvres requiring several alternating forward shifts and backward shifts.

Driving in automatic mode

Set the lever 1 to D position.

You will no longer have to touch your gear lever: the gears will change automatically at the right time and at the most suitable engine speed as the automatic system takes into account the vehicle load, the road type and the driving style you have chosen.

Economical driving

When driving, always leave the lever in position D, keeping the accelerator pedal lightly depressed to ensure automatic gear changes at a lower engine speed.

Accelerating and overtaking

Depress the accelerator pedal briskly and fully (so that it goes beyond the kickdown point).

This will enable you to shift down to the optimal gear according to the engine's capabilities.

Driving in B mode

(Hybrid version)

This mode enables driving with greater regenerative engine braking.

warning

The engine brake should under no circumstances be used as a substitute for the brake pedal.

With the vehicle stationary and the engine running, shift the selector lever 1 two notches backwards to engage B position.

While driving, releasing the accelerator pedal activates regenerative braking to slow the vehicle.

Thus the electric motor generates a higher electrical current which enables the traction battery to be recharged.

Note: in B mode, regenerative braking will be reduced if the battery is cold or fully charged.

Driving in manual mode

(depending on the vehicle)

Gear changing paddles 4 and 5

Depending on the vehicle, when driving in D position, you can switch to manual driving mode by using paddles 4 and 5 on the steering wheel.

4 : Change to a lower gear.

5 : Change to a higher gear.

The P, N and R positions cannot be accessed using the paddles.

Note: On Hybrid 4x4 versions, when the vehicle is operating in all-electric mode, the steering wheel paddles are not active. The 2_ALL_419_1_pictogramme.png warning light is displayed in green on the instrument panel to confirm this All-electric driving mode.

Manual driving modes

Two manual driving modes are available:

  • the "temporary" manual mode can be used to force gear shifting by briefly pressing one of the two paddles. The driving mode D and the gear engaged appear on the instrument panel.

Note: the gearbox switches back to automatic mode D by itself if the engaged gear is no longer optimal or if no action has been taken on a paddle for a certain amount of time.

  • you can activate "permanent" manual mode by pressing and holding one of the two paddles. The driving mode M and the gear engaged appear on the instrument panel.

Note: depending on the vehicle, you can return to automatic mode by pressing and holding the right-hand paddle or by moving the one-touch lever 1 one or two notches backwards.

In all situations:

  • to shift down through the gears, press the left-hand paddle;
  • to shift up through the gears, press the right-hand paddle.

Note:

  • depending on the display, the "+" and "˗" indicators or the 2_ALL_355_1_pictogramme.png and warning lights suggest that you shift up or down a gear.
  • on Hybrid 4x4 versions, in permanent manual mode it is not possible to switch to all-electric mode.

Special cases

In certain driving conditions (e.g. requiring engine protection, operation of Electronic Stability Control: ESC, etc.), the system may change the gear automatically.

Likewise, to prevent incorrect manoeuvres, the system may automatically refuse a gear change: in this case, the gear indicator flashes for a few seconds to alert you.

In the case of steep slopes, long descents or difficult surfaces (snow, sand, mud), it is recommended to switch to manual mode using the paddles. This will prevent the automatic gearbox from changing gears repeatedly when driving uphill and permit engine braking on long descents.

Special circumstances

To avoid the engine stalling in very cold weather, wait a few seconds before disengaging P or N position and shifting the lever to D/B or R.

tip

On an uphill slope, do not keep your foot on the accelerator to keep the vehicle stationary – use the brakes.

Risk of overheating the automatic gearbox.

Parking the vehicle

warning

For safety reasons, do not switch off the ignition before the vehicle has come to a complete standstill.

With the vehicle stationary, the gearbox automatically shifts to P position and the electronic parking brake is also engaged, when:

  • the engine is stopped;
  • the driver's seatbelt is unfastened and the vehicle is stationary;
  • the driver's door is opened and the vehicle is stationary.

The P warning light is displayed on the instrument panel and the indicator light on button 2 lights up.

Ensure that the parking brake is applied.

As P position is automatically engaged when the engine is stopped, it is sometimes necessary to set the vehicle to N position for some car washes, for example:

  • with the engine running, press the button 2, move the selector lever 1 one notch forwards or backwards, then switch off the engine;

or

  • with the engine off and the ignition on, move the selector lever 1 one notch forwards or backwards.

The next time the engine is started, P position is engaged automatically according to the cases described earlier.

Maintenance period

Refer to the maintenance document for your vehicle or consult an approved Dealer to check whether the automatic gearbox requires scheduled maintenance.

If it does not need to be serviced, there is no need to top up the oil.

Operating faults

  • During driving, if the "WARNING: Check Gearbox" message appears on the instrument panel, this indicates a fault. Contact an approved Dealer as soon as possible;
  • during driving, if the "WARNING: Gearbox Overheating" message appears on the instrument panel, stop as soon as possible to allow the gearbox to cool down and wait until the message disappears;
  • breakdown recovery of vehicle fitted with an automatic gearbox Towing: breakdown.

In the event of engine failure or an electrical fault (battery fault) affecting operation of the automatic gearbox, ensure that the vehicle is properly immobilised.

warning

In the event of an impact to the subframe of the vehicle during a manoeuvre (e.g. impact with a bollard, a raised kerb or any other street furniture), this may cause damage to the vehicle (e.g. distortion of an axle), the electrical circuit or the traction battery.

Do not touch the circuit elements or any fluids or liquids.

To prevent any risk of an accident, have your vehicle checked by an approved Dealer as soon as possible.

Risk of serious injury or electric shock that could lead to death.
